Bovine AI: the ten-step field procedure
The standard field procedure for loading and using a reusable AI gun with a universal sheath and a frozen straw. Written for trained technicians as a refresher, not as a substitute for certified training.

Procedure

Inspect and clean the gun
Wipe the barrel and plunger with a clean dry cloth or disinfectant wipe. Never reuse a gun on a new animal without cleaning.

Thaw the straw
Remove with forceps and thaw in a water bath at 35–37 °C for 30–45 seconds. Avoid direct hand contact.

Dry and inspect
Wipe dry with a clean paper towel. Check for air bubbles or damage and discard any compromised straw.

Cut the straw
Cut the crimped end squarely with a straw cutter. An angled cut leaks.

Load the gun
Draw back the plunger, insert the straw cut-end first and seat it fully.

Fit the sheath
Slide the universal sheath over the gun. Turn the collar on a twist-lock, or close the clip on a clip-lock.

Protect and transport
Cover with a clean sanitary sleeve and keep the gun warm on the way to the animal.

Restrain and locate the cervix
Restrain the animal, then insert a lubricated gloved arm rectally to locate and stabilise the cervix.

Pass through the cervix
Remove the outer sleeve, wipe the vulva, and guide the gun through the cervical rings into the uterine body.

Deposit, withdraw and record
Depress the plunger slowly over 3–5 seconds. Withdraw, discard the sheath and straw, and record bull ID, date and technician.
